Perched high above the village of Hohenschwangau in southwestern Bavaria, Neuschwanstein Castle's architecture offers theatrical grandeur and fairy-tale romanticism. The castle is a fusion of reality and the fantasy that few other buildings in the world can match. Commissioned in 1868 by Ludwig II, King of Bavaria, the castle was built atop a cliff ridge and was unfinished at the time of the death in 1886.
Neuschwanstein Castle served as inspiration for the castle in "Sleeping Beauty" and can be seen in the 1968 children’s classic "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang."
